Join us for a fun and creative Harrow Code Club session as we continue our Physics Through Coding and Creative Computing journey, supported by the Institute of Physics.

This week we’ll be exploring Forces, Motion & Gravity through coding.

Children will learn how coding can help us understand how things move, change direction, speed up, slow down and react when they collide.

🎮 Ages 5–7 – Scratch

Children will continue developing their Scratch skills through the Code Club pathway. New kids will start with the foundation with Space Talk. The regular kids will continue with 'Grow a Dragonfly' project.

They will explore:
movement and direction
changing speed
making sprites move across the screen
using events and simple instructions
experimenting with what happens when values in the code are changed

Newer children will be supported step by step, while more confident children can extend their projects with extra movement challenges.

🐍 Older / more confident children – Python: Don’t Collide!
Children will work on the Raspberry Pi Foundation project Don’t Collide!

They will create an interactive game in Python where a player must avoid moving obstacles.

Through the project, they will explore:
variables
functions
loops
if statements
movement and position
speed
collision detection
testing and debugging

We’ll also connect the coding to physics by asking questions such as:
What makes an object appear to move faster?
What happens when two moving objects meet?
How does changing speed affect the difficulty of the game?
How can the computer tell when a collision has happened?

🔬 Physics challenge

Children will use our simple investigation process:

Predict → Code → Test → Observe → Explain

They will change something in their project, predict what they think will happen, test their code and explain the result.

Where time allows, we may also introduce a short Makerzoid Robot Master demonstration to explore real-world movement, balance and mechanical engineering.

Children will develop:

Coding confidence
Curiosity about physics
Creativity and imagination
Logical thinking
Problem-solving
Testing and debugging skills
Teamwork and communication

New children are very welcome. No previous coding or physics experience is required.

Please remember:
All attendees must have an adult with them
Remember to bring your laptop with you
You must book a place to attend
Please don’t come if you are feeling unwell
We’ll be exploring Forces, Motion & Gravity through Scratch and Python
Children should bring their own laptop where possible
Parents and carers are encouraged to support younger children during the session

We look forward to another fun morning of coding, creativity, experimentation and physics at Harrow Code Club.

Thanks & Regards

Methu bod yn bresennol?

Rhowch wybod i arweinydd y clwb os na allwch chi fod yn bresennol mwyach.

Mae angen i ni wybod pwy sy'n bwriadu bod yn bresennol yn Code Club i wneud yn siŵr bod digon o le i bawb!
